Hirschi's Social Control Theory Hirschi (1969) argues that social control theory is basically a theory of confor-mity used to explain deviance. The theory is unique in that it purports to explain why some youths do not violate society's rules in spite of the lure of drugs, alco-hol, petty theft, and other temptations.
